Field measurements of sea surface temperature were attempted to be used to evaluate the performance of the standard sea surface temperature algorithm of the New IR Sensor Technology (NIRST). During the first step of our project we were interested to describe the relationship between in situ temperature data and the NIRST SST data. Oceanographic cruises were conducted in spring and summer when the thermal front of San MatÃas Gulf was structured. Satellite data were requested for the same specific dates but SST satellite data could not be compared with in-situ temperature to determine the accuracy of SAC-D Aquarius data, due to quality problems of data from the NIRST sensor. We are still interested in data from HSC, NIRST and MWR sensors which, jointly with in situ obtained meteorological and fishery data, will be used to study seasonal effects not only in the thermal front but also during upwelling processes over the west coast of San MatÃas Gulf.
